East Coast Railway (ECoR) to Introduce Advanced 2X25 KV Electrification System for Enhanced Train Operations

Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) is set to revolutionize its electrification infrastructure by implementing a state-of-the-art 2X25 KV Overhead Electrification (OHE) System across key railway sections. This upgrade aims to improve voltage stability, enable smoother semi-high-speed train operations, and accommodate the increased movement of heavily-loaded freight trains, supporting the Railway Board’s ambitious 3000 MT loading target.

The existing 1X25 KV OHE system will be replaced by the enhanced 2X25 KV system to meet higher load demands. The new system works by transmitting power at 50 KV from Traction Sub-stations (TSS), then supplying trains with 25 KV power through intermediate autotransformers. This approach ensures stable voltage levels, even across extended sections, to support the efficient operation of both passenger and heavy freight services.

The planned sections for the 2X25 KV system upgrade include:

  • Bhadrak-Khurda Road
  • Palasa-Vizianagaram
  • Cuttack-Paradeep
  • Cuttack-Talcher-Angul
  • Vizianagaram-Rayagada

The ECoR Construction Organization has begun preparations for this ambitious project, with tenders already invited for the Cuttack-Paradeep and Cuttack-Talcher sections. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2027.

Advancing Sustainability and Green Energy

In alignment with India’s commitment to sustainability, the transition to the 2X25 KV system will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels by promoting electric-powered trains, which are more energy-efficient and eco-friendly than diesel. This transition is a step toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the transportation sector by 2030, aligning with India’s broader environmental goals.

As ECoR continues to enhance its infrastructure, this electrification upgrade is expected to play a critical role in boosting passenger and freight operations, reinforcing ECoR’s position at the forefront of railway electrification in India.

About East Coast Railway (ECoR):

One of Indian Railways’ 17 zones, East Coast Railway serves major parts of Odisha, North Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Chhattisgarh. ECoR remains focused on modernizing infrastructure to improve performance, capacity, and safety across its network, contributing significantly to India’s railway sector.
