CSIR Launches ‘Phenome India’ Health Check-Up Camp for CSIR Family

New Delhi: To ensure holistic health within its ranks, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has inaugurated a unique health check-up camp named ‘Phenome India’ (PI-CHeCK) for the CSIR family. The primary objectives of this initiative are aligned with the vision of ensuring “Swasthya Bharat Viksir Bharat,” promoting health and wellness across the organization.

CSIR, known as one of the largest research and development organizations in India with a network of 37 laboratories across the country, has taken this significant step through the National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR). The PI-CHeCK health check-up camp was organized at the Pusa Campus, New Delhi, from March 3 to March 5, 2024.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, and Dr. Shantanu Sengupta, Chief Scientist of CSIR-IGIB. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 98 individuals within the institute and was efficiently coordinated by Dr. Kanika Malik, Dr. Narendra Kumar Sahoo, Dr. Arvind Meena, Shri Narendra Pal, and Shri Kailash Chandr Parewa.

Beyond a standard health check-up, Phenome India aims to contribute to the understanding of the unique health landscape of the nation. The data collected through PI-CHeCK will pave the way for tailored healthcare solutions, marking a significant stride toward advancing medical knowledge.

The flagship project, Phenome India-CSIR Health Cohort Knowledgebase (PI-CHeCK), focuses on identifying India-specific risk factors for cardio-metabolic diseases. This groundbreaking study, conducted in collaboration with experts and participants from various CSIR labs nationwide, aims to provide valuable scientific insights for personalized and precision medicine.

PI-CHeCK is a long-term cohort study designed to encompass the diverse Indian population. The comprehensive data collection includes clinical questionnaires, lifestyle and dietary habits, body composition measurements, scanning-based assessments, blood biochemistry, and molecular assay-based data.

CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) is dedicated to advancing science communication, evidence-based Science Technology and Innovation policy research, and promoting scientific awareness among the public. Through innovative initiatives and collaborative efforts, CSIR-NIScPR strives to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the general public.

The ‘Phenome India’ initiative represents a significant commitment by CSIR to the well-being of its personnel and the advancement of healthcare knowledge in the country, reinforcing its role as a leading institution in scientific research and development.
