Bhubaneswar: The night flea market of Ekamra Utsav unfolded, a mesmerizing spectacle of craftsmanship and community connection captivated the crowds.
Organized by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), the night market served as a vibrant hub for artisans to showcase their skills. Among them, Vikas Sahu, a skilled craftsman hailing from Gondmunda, Bhubaneswar, emerged as a beacon of traditional craftsmanship.
With meticulous precision, Vikas demonstrated the intricate process of crafting wooden items, a tradition passed down through generations. Spectators gathered around him, spellbound by the transformation of raw wood into exquisite pieces of art.
Having dedicated himself to the craft since his schooling days at Sidak in 2010, Vikas embodies not only dedication and passion but also a commitment to passing on his knowledge. He conducts workshops and serves as a craft teacher, ensuring that the legacy of traditional craftsmanship endures.
Among his creations, Vikas proudly displayed wooden objects adorned with Odia inscriptions, crafted specifically for the Odia language conference. From intricately designed key rings and homewares to elephants and Krishna idols, each piece showcased his exceptional skill and commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
As Vikas shared his experiences, his eyes sparkled with pride and fulfillment. He recounted his journey from 2D to 3D craftsmanship, a testament to his continuous innovation and pursuit of excellence.
His latest endeavor involves crafting key rings inscribed with district names in the Odia script, paying homage to linguistic diversity and cultural identity. Despite their modest price of 70 rupees, these tokens resonate deeply with the people of Nabgunj.
For Vikas, showcasing his work at such a grand occasion is more than just an opportunity; it is a celebration of tradition, craftsmanship, and community. His creations not only adorn the night flea market but also weave a narrative of cultural richness and artistic legacy.
