Bhubaneswar to Get Elevated Corridor on Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road to Ease Traffic

Bhubaneswar: In a major step to address the growing traffic congestion in the capital city, Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced that an elevated corridor will be constructed on the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road. The project, estimated to cost ₹2,700 crore, aims to improve connectivity and streamline traffic movement in one of Bhubaneswar’s busiest corridors.

The planned corridor will stretch from Jayadev Vihar Square to Nandankanan, seamlessly integrating with the existing Jayadev Vihar flyover. Designed as a double-decker structure, it will feature a four-lane road for vehicular movement on the first level, while the second level will accommodate the upcoming metro project. This dual-purpose design is expected to optimize urban space and enhance overall traffic flow.

Minister Harichandan confirmed that construction is set to begin by the end of April, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently being finalized. The elevated road will be built at a height of 8 meters (26.24 feet) from the ground, while the metro track will be positioned at 14 meters (46 feet). To facilitate smooth traffic movement, escapeways will be strategically placed at key junctions, ensuring seamless transitions between the service road and the flyover.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2027-28 and is being seen as a sustainable solution to the city’s increasing traffic woes. Unlike conventional road expansion, which would require large-scale displacement of residents and tree felling, the elevated corridor will minimize disruptions and help preserve the city’s green cover.

This initiative is a significant milestone in Bhubaneswar’s urban development, marking a transformative change in the city’s transportation infrastructure. Once completed, the corridor is expected to enhance commuting efficiency, reduce travel time, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
