Assam Bans Beef in Restaurants, Hotels, and Public Spaces

Guwahati: The Assam government has imposed a statewide ban on the serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public spaces. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening regulations around beef consumption. “We have decided to ban serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places,” the Chief Minister stated.

Sarma noted that while existing laws on beef consumption were robust, they lacked provisions to regulate its availability in public or social settings. “Earlier, we prohibited beef consumption near temples. Now, the restriction has been expanded across the state, covering all community and public places, hotels, and restaurants,” he explained.

This decision reflects the government’s broader efforts to address sensitivities around beef consumption in the state. The Chief Minister highlighted that this policy builds on earlier measures aimed at fostering social harmony and respect for diverse cultural sentiments.

Sarma also revealed plans for a cabinet expansion on December 7, a move expected to bring further governance changes in Assam.

The new prohibition is likely to spark discussions among various communities and stakeholders in the state, with the government aiming to ensure smooth implementation through awareness and enforcement measures.
