Annual Dolphin Census Kickstarts in Puri

Puri: The annual dolphin census in Odisha commenced today, marking a significant effort to monitor and protect the vibrant marine life in the region. The counting process has been initiated in Chilika Lake and Gahirmatha, a crucial hub for dolphin habitats.

A dedicated workforce of 35 forest officials and wildlife experts, organized into 12 teams, is spearheading this comprehensive census. The teams embarked on their mission from the Devi River Mouth in Astaranga, covering a substantial stretch up to Arakhakuda in the coastal district. The three-day exercise aims to assess the population of dolphins across the diverse aquatic landscapes, including the sea, rivers, and water bodies.

The annual dolphin census not only provides vital data for conservation strategies but also underscores Odisha’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity. As the teams resume their efforts after today’s interruption, the findings from this year’s census are anticipated to contribute significantly to marine conservation efforts in the region.
