Ranchi: In a momentous occasion, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra in Ranchi today. The event marked 75 years of excellence in education, research, and innovation, with a special emphasis on the institute’s contributions to engineering, technology, and allied fields.
During her address, President Murmu highlighted the transformative role of technology in today’s world, acknowledging the sweeping advancements in the field of information technology that have reshaped the way people live. She remarked that what was once considered unthinkable has now become a reality, citing the rapid progress made in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). “We are entering an era where technology will continue to disrupt and redefine various aspects of our lives,” she stated. “The coming years will witness dramatic advancements, especially in AI, which will significantly impact economies across the globe.”
The President lauded the Government of India’s swift response to the growing importance of AI, particularly its integration into higher education institutions. She mentioned various government initiatives aimed at equipping students and faculty with the necessary skills and tools to leverage AI’s potential, ensuring that India remains competitive in the global technology race.
However, while acknowledging the immense potential of technological progress, President Murmu expressed concern about its social implications, especially for marginalized communities. She emphasized the need to ensure that the opportunities and transformations brought about by technology are accessible to all. “As we continue to advance technologically, we must ensure that these benefits extend to every section of society, particularly the most vulnerable,” she added.
The President also touched upon the importance of balancing high-tech solutions with traditional knowledge. She advised the youth to not overlook the value of small-scale, traditional solutions to problems, which may be just as effective as cutting-edge technological interventions. “Innovators and entrepreneurs must draw inspiration from the knowledge base of traditional communities,” she stated, encouraging the younger generation to blend innovation with the wisdom passed down through generations.
Speaking about BIT Mesra’s contributions to the country’s academic and technological landscape, President Murmu expressed her admiration for the institute’s pioneering efforts in various fields. She highlighted that BIT Mesra had established the first Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry in India in 1964, followed by the creation of one of the country’s first Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Parks (STEP) in 1975, aimed at promoting engineering entrepreneurship.
“BIT Mesra’s legacy is a testament to its unwavering commitment to fostering education, research, and innovation,” the President said, adding that the institute has significantly contributed to the evolution of science and technology in India. She expressed confidence that the institution would continue to play a leading role in shaping the future of education and technology in the country.
The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations also featured presentations by the institute’s leadership, faculty, and students, showcasing the advancements in research, innovation, and the future directions of BIT Mesra. The event was attended by distinguished dignitaries from the education sector, industry, and government, all of whom celebrated the rich history and future promise of BIT Mesra.
