Goa: The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) witnessed the world premiere of ‘Left Unsaid’ (Lo Que No Se Dijo), a deeply moving Portuguese film by debutant director Ricardo Valenzuela Pinilla. Featured under the Cinema of the World section, the film offers an introspective look at the paradoxes of human communication in the age of mobile technology.
Set in 1994 in Southern Chile, ‘Left Unsaid’ revolves around Margarita, a single mother striving to balance her role as a mobile phone saleswoman with the emotional complexities of her personal life. At the heart of the narrative lies Margarita’s strained relationship with her own mother, a poignant irony given her profession, which seeks to connect others through technology.
“This story draws from my own life,” shared Pinilla during a press conference at IFFI. “The main character is inspired by my mother, who sold mobile phones in rural areas during the 1990s. It was a time when people resisted letting go of traditional communication methods.”
The film meticulously recreates the 1990s, showcasing the rural landscapes of Chile. “We didn’t rely on advanced technology to depict the time period,” Pinilla explained. “Instead, the art department’s exceptional efforts and the minimal changes in rural Chile over the years allowed us to create an authentic backdrop.”
Pinilla worked with a small crew, casting many non-professional local actors. “This was a low-budget production, but it has a big heart,” he remarked, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the film.
Beyond its nostalgic setting, ‘Left Unsaid’ resonates with a timeless message. “It’s ironic,” said Pinilla, “that we are more connected than ever through smartphones and social media, yet our interpersonal relationships have become more fragmented.”
As the founder of Delavida Films, a production company he established in 2013, Pinilla is a passionate advocate for independent Latin American cinema. ‘Left Unsaid’ is a co-production with Colombia, reflecting his vision of collaborative growth in a region without an established film industry. “Being at IFFI is a landmark moment,” Pinilla noted. “It’s an honor to represent Latin America and bring its stories to a global audience.”
Through its heartfelt narrative, ‘Left Unsaid’ explores the universal human longing for connection. “Whether in 1994 or 2024, the internal struggles remain the same,” Pinilla concluded. “The tools of communication may evolve, but the need for genuine human connection endures.”
