Renowned Fashion Icon Rohit Bal Passes Away at 63
Mumbai: The Indian fashion industry mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, Rohit Bal, who passed away on Friday at the age of 63. The celebrated designer had been battling a heart ailment, according to Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). “He was rushed to the hospital today… but didn’t make it,” Sethi confirmed with a heavy heart.
Tributes poured in from Bal’s friends and admirers, remembering him as an influential figure who brought passion and originality to the world of fashion. Gautam Singhania, a close friend, expressed his grief on social media, writing, “Heartbroken to say goodbye to an incredible friend. You brought so much light, laughter, and kindness… Your spirit will live on in all of us. Rest peacefully, my friend.”
Known affectionately as ‘Gudda’ by his loved ones, Bal was celebrated as the ‘Czar of Fashion’ in India. Despite struggling with health issues, he made a remarkable comeback at Lakme Fashion Week last month, showcasing his collection “Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe.” At this event, actress Ananya Panday graced the ramp as Bal’s muse, representing his designs at the Imperial, New Delhi.
Bal’s signature style, marked by pastels, earthy tones, and intricate embroidery, won the admiration of celebrities worldwide. His clientele included global icons like Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Pamela Anderson, and Ana Kournikova. He designed for both men and women, with each line reflecting his flamboyant, elegant approach to fashion.
Beyond clothing, Bal collaborated with brands such as Hidesign, Oriflame, and Mitsubishi Outlander, expanding his influence across industries. He also opened flagship stores in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai, leaving a lasting legacy in India’s luxury fashion market.
