New Delhi: In a poignant tribute to the valiant police personnel who sacrificed their lives for the nation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has assumed responsibility for the solemn ceremony at the National Police Memorial (NPM) for the month of February 2024.
The NPM, located in Delhi, serves as a symbol of reverence for the police forces across the country, recognizing their unwavering commitment in maintaining national security. Every weekend, the memorial hosts a ceremony to express gratitude and pay respects to the police martyrs, with the responsibility rotating among Central Police Forces. The RPF, an armed force under the Ministry of Railways, is set to conduct this poignant event throughout February.
The opening ceremony on February 3, 2024, marked the commencement of the month-long tribute. Activities included the laying of wreaths on the Police Memorial, a Band Display, and a Retreat, with Sh. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, IG-cum-PCSC/RPF South Eastern Railway, presiding as the chief guest.
The RPF, which has evolved from safeguarding railway property to becoming dedicated protectors of passengers, has a remarkable record of achievements. In 2023 alone, the force saved 3719 lives, rescued 11794 distressed children and 3492 adults, and successfully combated human trafficking and drug smuggling, making significant arrests in these areas.
The force, driven by the motto “Sewa Hi Sankalp,” has been recognized for its dedication with numerous awards. RPF personnel have been honored with 3 President’s Police Medals for Gallantry, 19 Police Medals for Gallantry, 94 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 942 Medals for Meritorious Service.
The solemn ceremony at the NPM holds particular significance for the RPF, given the force’s rich legacy of martyrdom. Over 1000 RPF/RPSF personnel have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, battling insurgents, antinational elements, and criminals to safeguard Indian Railways and its commuters.
Families of the martyrs were invited from various parts of the nation to participate in the ceremony. Alongside the families of the Force personnel, they paid homage to the fallen heroes by offering floral tributes at the National Police Memorial and explored the museum on the premises. The Chief Guest, Sh. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, honored and felicitated the families during the function, which concluded with a captivating band display.
The ceremony will continue to be conducted by the RPF at the NPM on every Saturday and Sunday throughout February 2024, ensuring a sustained and heartfelt tribute to the nation’s brave guardians.
