YB Khurania Appointed as New Director General of Police for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force (HoPF) for Odisha, the state government announced on Friday. The decision follows the recommendation of three IPS officers by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the top police post. Khurania, a 1990-batch IPS officer, will succeed Arun Kumar Sarangi, who was serving as the acting DGP.

YB Khurania’s appointment marks a significant return to his home cadre after a five-year stint on Central Deputation. Before his repatriation, Khurania held the position of Special Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), Western Command, in Chandigarh, where he played a crucial role in securing India’s borders and combating transnational crimes.

Khurania’s extensive career in Odisha includes key roles as Superintendent of Police in Nayagarh, Jajpur, Rourkela, Mayurbhanj, and Ganjam districts. He also served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for the southern and northern ranges, Additional Commissioner of Police, and Commissioner of Police for Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. Additionally, he was the Director of the Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA), where he contributed to police training and development.

Throughout his more than three-decade-long career, Khurania has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to law enforcement and public safety. Notably, he played a key role in the arrest of Dara Singh, the main culprit in the murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two sons, a case that shook the nation and underscored Khurania’s dedication to justice.
