Virat Kohli Clinches ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2023 Honors
Hyderabad: In a resounding acknowledgment of his exceptional performance in the 50-over format, Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli has been crowned the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2023. The announcement follows Kohli’s outstanding contributions during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, where he not only secured the Player of the Tournament title but also played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the final.
Virat Kohli had a remarkable 2023 in ODI cricket as he gathered 1377 runs from 27 matches while taking 12 catches and one wicket.
Kohli’s cricketing prowess was on full display throughout the year, reaching its zenith during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The Indian batting stalwart showcased unparalleled consistency, registering at least a half-century in nine out of eleven innings during the World Cup. His staggering tally of 765 runs surpassed the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar in 2003, making Kohli the highest individual run-scorer in a men’s Cricket World Cup. He averaged at 95.62 with a strike rate of 90.31 while scoring 3 centuries including the one in the semi-final against New Zealand to record his 50th ODI 100.
Kohli’s impact wasn’t confined to the World Cup alone. The seasoned campaigner achieved a historic milestone by completing a record tally of 50 ODI centuries, solidifying his position as the leading century-hitter in the format’s storied history.
The semi-final clash against New Zealand became a defining moment as Kohli’s sublime innings, complemented by a significant partnership with Shreyas Iyer, paved the way for India to post a monumental total of 397. Reflecting on the achievement, Kohli remarked, “It’s stuff of dreams, Anushka was sitting right there, Sachin paaji was there in the stands.”
Despite the disappointment in the final, where India fell short of victory, Kohli’s remarkable year concludes with 1377 runs at an impressive average of 72.47. His tally includes six centuries and eight half-centuries in 24 innings, solidifying his status as one of the modern greats in the world of ODI cricket.
Virat Kohli’s exceptional performances have not only etched his name in cricketing history but have also brought joy to the countless fans who continue to witness the maestro’s enduring excellence on the field.
