Veteran Goalkeeper P R Sreejesh Announces Paris Olympics as Final International Appearance

New Delhi: In a heartfelt announcement, veteran goalkeeper and former captain of India’s hockey team, P R Sreejesh, declared that the upcoming Paris Olympics will be his final appearance on the international stage. The 36-year-old, who has earned 328 international caps and participated in three Olympic Games, will compete in his fourth and final Olympics, which begins on July 26.

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Sreejesh expressed pride and anticipation as he prepares for his last performance. “As I gear up for my final performance in Paris, I reflect on my career with great pride and look to the future with hope,” Sreejesh stated in a press release issued by Hockey India.

Sreejesh, who made his debut at the 2010 World Cup, has been a cornerstone of the Indian hockey team, contributing significantly to the nation’s successes over the years. His career highlights include pivotal roles in India’s victories at the 2014 Asian Games, where the team won gold, and the 2018 Asian Games, where they secured bronze in Jakarta-Palembang. He was also instrumental in the team’s triumph at the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy and played a key part in the 2019 FIH Men’s Series Finals victory in Bhubaneswar.

In his statement, Sreejesh acknowledged the crucial support he has received throughout his career. “This extraordinary journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support and love from my family, teammates, coaches, fans, and Hockey India. I am deeply thankful for your faith in me,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude towards his teammates, emphasizing their collective effort and ambition. “My teammates have been my pillar during both challenging and passionate moments. Our collective goal in Paris is to excel and aspire to alter the medal’s hue,” Sreejesh added.
