Union Minister Piyush Goyal Spearheads India’s Economic Diplomacy at G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting
Reggio Calabria, Italy: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, played a pivotal role at the G7 Trade Ministers’ meeting held in Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria, Italy, underscoring India’s proactive stance in global economic engagements. The meeting served as a crucial platform for fostering international trade relations and economic cooperation amidst evolving global dynamics.
During the summit, Minister Goyal engaged in several high-level bilateral meetings with key international counterparts, reflecting India’s commitment to deepening economic partnerships across the globe. Discussions with Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, focused on bolstering bilateral trade, investments, industrial co-production, and cooperation in clean technologies. Minister Goyal lauded Italy’s efforts in hosting a productive G7 Trade Ministers’ meeting, highlighting the shared commitment to enhancing economic ties.
Conversations with Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, centered on advancing India-EU trade relations, including ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Both sides explored avenues for strengthening collaboration in diverse fields of mutual interest.
Minister Goyal also held talks with New Zealand’s Trade Minister, Todd McClay, aimed at expanding bilateral trade and investment opportunities, building upon the robust economic relationship between India and New Zealand.
Acknowledging the appointment of Jonathan Reynolds, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Minister Goyal discussed avenues for deepening bilateral economic relations and advancing discussions on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement.
In a meeting with Dr. Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Climate Action, Germany, Minister Goyal explored avenues to enhance Indo-German economic cooperation, focusing on upcoming Inter-Governmental Consultations and the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Businesses in Delhi.
These strategic engagements are poised to pave the way for substantial advancements in India’s economic diplomacy with key global partners.
Minister Goyal’s participation in the G7 Trade Ministers’ meeting highlighted India’s proactive approach in engaging with global economies to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
During the session, Minister Goyal expressed gratitude to Antonio Tajani for the invitation and underscored the importance of strengthening global supply chains in the face of crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Ukraine-Russia conflict, and Red Sea crisis.
Minister Goyal emphasized India’s initiatives with strategic partners like the US, GCC countries, and the EU, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) to bolster resilient supply chains. He highlighted India’s efforts to enhance multimodal connectivity and proposed collaboration among trusted partners to fortify global supply chains in critical sectors such as critical minerals, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and green energy.
He advocated for public-private partnerships, investments in critical infrastructure, innovation, and consistent regulatory frameworks across G7 nations and partner countries to ensure resilient and sustainable supply chains amidst global challenges.
