Bhubaneswar: Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal, conducted a comprehensive review of Odisha’s urban development initiatives, emphasizing the transformation of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Khordha into major Growth Hubs to drive regional economic development. The discussions focused on infrastructure enhancement, industrial expansion, and sustainable urbanization through strategic planning and public-private partnerships.

A key highlight of the meeting was the proposal to develop a new city as part of the Greater Bhubaneswar area. Manohar Lal assured the Centre’s support for this ambitious project and urged the State Government to explore funding opportunities under the 15th Finance Commission and the Urban Challenge Fund. The project aims to accommodate Odisha’s growing urban population and serve as a model for planned urban expansion.

Sustainable urban mobility was another critical area of discussion. The Central Government has approved the deployment of 400 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri e-Bus Sewa Scheme, which will enhance eco-friendly public transport across Odisha. The Minister also reviewed the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project and reaffirmed full support from the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs to fast-track its implementation, recognizing the need for improved mass transit in the capital city.

In the housing sector, the Minister reviewed the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban) and discussed a proposal for 50,000 new houses under the second phase of the scheme (PMAY-2). He assured that the Centre would work closely with the State Government to expedite approvals and ensure timely execution. Notably, Bhubaneswar was the launch site for the PMAY initiative, marking Odisha’s strong commitment to affordable housing.

Odisha’s achievements under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) were also acknowledged, with the Minister commending the state’s progress, particularly in the 24×7 water supply project currently being implemented across 18 cities. He emphasized the need to accelerate such urban infrastructure programs to ensure equitable access to essential services.

The state’s advancements under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 were reviewed, with a focus on sanitation and waste management improvements. Manohar Lal directed the State Government to intensify efforts to clear legacy waste sites, reclaim urban land, and develop greener public spaces, reinforcing the Centre’s push for sustainable urban living.

Additionally, the Minister stressed the need for faster implementation of the PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, urging state authorities to expand outreach and facilitate quicker credit access for street vendors. The scheme plays a crucial role in empowering small businesses and strengthening urban livelihoods.
