Union Health Minister Stresses Consumer Empowerment in Food Safety

New Delhi: Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, underscored the importance of empowering consumers and citizens with evidence-based information on food safety during a review meeting at the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) headquarters today. Highlighting the critical role of food safety in citizens’ well-being, he emphasized that the mission of FSSAI can be truly accomplished only through comprehensive consumer sensitization on food safety issues.

“Empowering consumers with knowledge about food safety is crucial,” stated Nadda. “In a diverse country like India, understanding regional dietary habits and preferences will help frame policies that align with these diversities.”

G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, briefed the Union Minister on various initiatives undertaken by FSSAI. Shri Nadda commended FSSAI for its significant progress since his last visit in 2016, noting advancements in strengthening the food safety ecosystem, fostering behavioral change, and sensitizing all stakeholders. He praised FSSAI’s leadership in promoting millets and establishing CODEX standards, and applauded their efforts in training and equipping street vendors.

“The issue of food safety is a huge responsibility for FSSAI. Let us aim to become global leaders in this area,” said Nadda, while also appreciating the widespread awareness created about millets, also known as Shree-Ann.

The Union Minister highlighted FSSAI’s contributions to developing global standards, establishing robust testing infrastructure, and launching initiatives like the Eat Right India campaign. He emphasized the importance of addressing emerging food safety trends, promoting sustainable farming practices, and leveraging technology to enhance food safety management.

Nadda called for proactive communication with industry and stakeholders, urging FSSAI to make them partners in healthy eating initiatives. “Let us take a proactive lead and communicate with the industry and stakeholders to ensure their participation in our efforts,” he stated.

He also stressed the importance of bringing all states onto a unified platform of pan-India standards by assessing their strengths, limitations, and challenges. “Understanding individual issues will help us support and strengthen their efforts,” he said.

During the visit, Nadda launched several significant initiatives, including the ‘Manual on Methods of Analysis of Foods – Microbiological Examination of Food and Water,’ a crucial reference for ensuring microbiological safety. He also unveiled a ‘Guide for Food Analysis – Opinion on Test Reports as per FSS Act, 2006, Rules, and Regulations made thereunder,’ and ‘Food Safety Bytes,’ a series of engaging videos featuring social media influencers to raise public awareness about food safety practices. Additionally, a ‘Manual for Food Safety Officers,’ designed to support officers in effectively enforcing food safety regulations, was introduced.
