Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda Reviews and Inaugurates Key Healthcare Initiatives in Assam

Assam: Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, visited prominent healthcare facilities across Assam today, inaugurating critical infrastructure and reviewing ongoing projects aimed at strengthening medical services in the region.

At the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) in Tezpur, Nadda inaugurated the new Library and Informatics Centre, marking a significant step in bolstering the institute’s academic and research capabilities. Praising the institute’s advancements, he stressed the importance of introducing super-specialty departments to serve both the Northeast and the country effectively.

During his visit, the Union Health Minister participated in a Board of Governors meeting, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Health Minister Ashok Singhal, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving mental healthcare in the region.

In Darrang district, Nadda laid the foundation stone for a 50-bedded Critical Care Block (CCB) at the Mangaldai District Civil Hospital. Supported by ₹23.75 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM ABHIM), the CCB is set to revolutionize access to advanced medical care for Assam’s residents.

The minister also inspected cancer treatment facilities at the district’s cancer hospital and a project under Tata Trusts, noting the improved access to cancer care. “Earlier, patients had to travel out of state for cancer treatment. Today, the people of Darrang can receive top-notch treatment close to home,” Nadda remarked.

Concluding his visit, Nadda, along with Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, inspected the progress of AIIMS Guwahati, a flagship healthcare project in the region. Nadda planted a sapling on the campus, symbolizing growth and sustainability, and reviewed ongoing activities alongside Dr. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati.

Ashok Singhal, Health Minister of Assam; Keshab Mahanta, Education Minister of Assam; Prasanta Phukan, Minister of Power, Skill Development, and Medical Education, Assam; and Dilip Saikia, Member of Parliament, joined the minister during his visit. Senior officials from the Union Health Ministry and the Assam State Government were also present, including Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, and Jaideep Kumar Mishra, Additional Secretary, Union Health Ministry.

Nadda’s visit reflects the Union Government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility in Assam and the Northeast, aligning with its broader mission of delivering equitable medical services across India. By focusing on mental health, critical care, and specialized institutions, the initiatives promise to transform healthcare delivery for millions in the region.
