
Bhubaneswar: On the eve of Republic Day, the distinguished Padma Shri Awards for 2024 have been bestowed upon two unsung heroes from Odisha, adding a new dimension to the state’s cultural legacy. Gopinath Swain and Bhagabat Pradhan, both revered for their significant contributions to traditional arts, stand among the 34 eminent individuals chosen for this esteemed recognition.
Hailing from Ganjam, Gopinath Swain is a renowned Krishna Leela Singer whose life’s work is dedicated to preserving and promoting this culturally rich tradition. His unwavering commitment to traditional techniques and innovative methods has breathed new life into Krishna Leela, creating a harmonious bridge between the past and the present. Despite his advanced age, Gopinath Swain continues to teach and propagate this unique art, actively scouting talent from across Southern Odisha. His journey in the musical realm began at the tender age of five, coming from a family of Krishna Leela performers.
An Exponent of Sabda Nrutya folk dance from Bargarh, Bhagabat Pradhan has been recognized for his tireless efforts in taking this traditional dance form beyond the confines of temples. Devoting over five decades of his life to preserving and popularizing the art considered the dance of Mahadev, Bhagabat Pradhan has trained more than 600 dancers, contributing significantly to the sustainability of Sabda Nrutya. Even while facing financial challenges during the 1960s while working as a Lower Primary School teacher, he remained unwavering in his devotion to this art form.
