Train Services Restored in Just Two Days After Massive Landslide on Koraput–Jeypore Line

Bhubaneswar: In a commendable display of rapid response and coordination, the East Coast Railway has successfully restored the train route between Jarati and Maliguda stations on the Koraput–Kirandul line—just two days after a massive landslide disrupted services on July 2, 2025. The section falls under the Waltair Division and was affected by incessant rains that triggered the landslide, burying the railway track under nearly 25,000 cubic meters of debris.

Train operations between Koraput and Kirandul had come to a standstill as mud, rocks, and boulders blocked the route. Despite the tough terrain and continuing rainfall, the restoration team swiftly mobilized resources and launched round-the-clock efforts to clear the site.

A fleet of 16 excavators and heavy earth-moving machinery was deployed, and more than 300 personnel—including engineers, technical experts, and ground workers—were pressed into service. Senior officers, including the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) of Waltair and Rayagada, Additional DRMs, and top-level officials, personally monitored the restoration operations to ensure timely progress.

By the evening of July 4, the site was cleared and the damaged track certified fit for restricted-speed operations. Restoration of critical systems such as Overhead Equipment (OHE), signalling, and other safety installations is underway and expected to be completed shortly.

General Manager of East Coast Railway, Parmeshwar Funkwal, praised the workforce and leadership team for their swift action. “This timely restoration is a shining example of what coordinated planning, teamwork, and dedication can achieve—even under severe weather and in challenging geographical conditions,” said Funkwal.

The early restoration has not only minimized disruptions for passengers and freight services but also reinforced Indian Railways’ commitment to reliability and public service.

While full services are set to resume soon, temporary rake constraints have led to some trains originating or terminating at Koraput today. Passengers are advised to stay updated through official railway platforms before making travel plans.
