Tourism Minister Gajendra Shekhawat Highlights Green Tourism and Global Collaboration at G20 Ministerial Meeting in Brazil

Belem, Brazil: Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, delivered India’s statement at the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Tourism, emphasizing the pivotal role of tourism in fostering economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. The meeting, held in Belem, Brazil, saw fruitful discussions on green tourism, data-driven decision-making, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the tourism sector.

In his address, Shekhawat highlighted India’s G20 Presidency achievements, including the Goa Roadmap for Tourism and the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which laid a strong foundation for sustainable tourism development. He stressed India’s commitment to green tourism, urging G20 member nations to collaborate and innovate to ensure that tourism continues to drive growth, employment, and prosperity.

“Tourism and culture are key to sustainable socio-economic development, and nature-positive tourism is essential for global progress. Our theme, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future,’ calls for inclusive and resilient tourism policies that benefit all,” the Minister remarked.

During the meeting, India’s five key focus areas for sustainable tourism – Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills Development, MSMEs, and Destination Management – received significant support. Shekhawat also introduced the Travel for LiFE program, part of India’s Mission LiFE, which aims to promote environmental sustainability through responsible tourism practices.

India also backed the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) initiative for a statistical framework to measure tourism sustainability. Shekhawat expressed optimism that ongoing discussions would empower communities, improve the quality of life, and further align tourism policies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Shekhawat thanked Brazil for its leadership in advancing the G20 tourism agenda and extended best wishes to South Africa for its upcoming G20 Presidency.

On the sidelines of the summit, Shekhawat held bilateral discussions with tourism ministers from Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and several other nations to address key issues related to tourist flows and global tourism cooperation.
