New Delhi: The third meeting of the Committee on Cotton Production and Consumption (COCPC) for the 2023-24 cotton season took place today under the chairpersonship of Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Representatives from the Central and State Governments, textile industry, cotton trade, and ginning and pressing sectors attended the meeting. The discussions focused on the state-wise area, production, import, export, and consumption of cotton.
During a post-meeting press conference, Textile Commissioner Roop Rashi announced that the industry would have sufficient raw material availability for the upcoming season. “Cotton consumption has increased, marking the second highest consumption in the past ten years,” she said. “The industry is on a good path, and we look forward to better consumption statistics.”
Lalit Kumar Gupta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) Ltd., highlighted the implementation of QR code traceability for each cotton bale. “This ensures transparency and better quality by providing information on the village of procurement, the factory where it was processed, and the date of sale,” he explained.
State-Wise Cotton Production and Consumption:
The committee reviewed and finalized the state-wise area, cotton production, and balance sheet for the cotton seasons 2022-23 and 2023-24 as follows:
- Area under Cultivation: The meeting discussed the total area under cotton cultivation in various states, highlighting any significant changes from the previous season.
- Production Estimates: Detailed production estimates were provided for each state, taking into account factors such as weather conditions and pest management efforts.
- Import and Export: The committee analyzed the data on cotton imports and exports, considering global market trends and trade policies.
- Consumption: The discussion included consumption rates within the country, noting the increase in domestic usage of cotton.
