Third Edition of INDUS-X Summit Marks Major Progress in U.S.-India Defence Innovation Collaboration

Washington DC: The third edition of the INDUS-X Summit, held in the United States on September 9-10, 2024, has concluded with significant advancements in the joint defence innovation ecosystem between India and the U.S. The event, jointly organized by the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and Stanford University, served as a landmark platform for fostering deeper collaboration in defence technologies.

One of the key highlights of the summit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India’s Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) under the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The MoU aims to enhance cooperation in defence innovation and expand partnerships among industry, research institutions, and investors in both nations. This agreement underscores the commitment to boosting technological collaboration and joint defence capabilities.

Milestones and Key Announcements

The two-day summit featured a series of important announcements, including the launch of a new innovation challenge under INDUS-X, aimed at spurring cutting-edge developments in defence technologies. Additionally, the INDUS-X Impact Report was released, highlighting the initiative’s progress since its launch in June 2023. Another significant development was the launch of the official INDUS-X webpage on both the iDEX and DIU websites, offering a resource hub for stakeholders involved in the initiative.

The summit provided a platform for startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from both countries to showcase next-generation technologies. Critical dialogues were held through two key forums: the Senior Advisory Group and the Senior Leaders Forum. Discussions focused on a range of issues, including future technology trends, capacity building for startups, funding opportunities, and the strengthening of defence supply chains.

High-Level Participation and Strategic Discussions

Distinguished experts from various sectors, including the defence industry, investment firms, startups, academia, think tanks, accelerators, and policymakers from both India and the U.S., participated in the summit. The event served as a critical meeting point to foster deeper partnerships and explore investment opportunities for defence innovations.

Leading the Indian delegation, Joint Secretary for Defence Industries Promotion, Sh. Amit Satija, emphasized the significance of the summit in bolstering defence ties. “The third edition of the INDUS-X Summit reaffirms the commitment of both India and the U.S. in advancing defence technology through innovation and strategic collaboration. The event has solidified our shared vision of leveraging cutting-edge technologies for mutual security and prosperity,” Satija stated.

Building on the Momentum of INDUS-X

The INDUS-X initiative is jointly steered by iDEX under India’s Ministry of Defence and the DIU under the U.S. Department of Defense. Launched during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the U.S. in June 2023, the initiative has achieved significant milestones within a short period, strengthening the technological and strategic partnership between the two nations.

By promoting collaboration in defence innovation, INDUS-X aims to empower startups and MSMEs, foster joint research and development, and ensure the seamless integration of new technologies into the defence sector. The progress made at the third edition of the summit marks a pivotal step in realizing this vision, and both nations look forward to the continued growth of this vital partnership.
