New Delhi: The Technology Development Board (TDB) has signed an agreement with APChemi Pvt. Ltd., Navi Mumbai, to support their project on the production and commercialization of purified pyrolysis oil, a key innovation aimed at transforming plastic waste into circular plastics and sustainable chemicals.
The partnership marks a major step in India’s sustainability efforts, as TDB extends financial assistance to bolster indigenous technological advancements in plastic waste recycling. The agreement was exchanged between TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak and APChemi CEO Suhas Dixit, in the presence of officials from both organizations.
APChemi, a leading innovator in plastic and biomass pyrolysis, holds 12 patents, including five granted, and has developed a pioneering method to convert non-recyclable plastic waste into refinery-grade pyrolysis oil. Their patented PUREMAX™ technology enables the purification of pyrolysis oil, making it suitable for producing PUROIL™, a feedstock validated by global petrochemical and FMCG giants such as Shell, BASF, Unilever, and PepsiCo.
With global plastic waste reaching 350 million metric tonnes annually—of which less than 10% is effectively recycled—APChemi’s innovation could revolutionize plastic circularity. The project aims to process 1.2 to 6 kilotonnes of waste per year, significantly reducing plastic pollution and carbon emissions while generating around 100 jobs.
A major breakthrough of this technology is its ability to process multi-layer packaging waste containing PET and PVC, with an impurity removal efficiency of up to 99.7% for chlorine. This development has already attracted interest from eight multinational corporations, eager to integrate PUROIL™ into their supply chains for sustainable plastic production.
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “APChemi’s innovative approach exemplifies the kind of indigenous solutions that TDB is committed to supporting. By addressing critical environmental challenges and strengthening domestic capabilities, this initiative will play a crucial role in building a self-reliant circular economy for plastics in India, reducing reliance on imported crude oil and fostering employment.”
Suhas Dixit, CEO, APChemi, described the initiative as a milestone in plastic waste management, saying, “Our partnership with TDB represents a significant step toward turning the plastic waste crisis into an economic opportunity.
