London: In a breathtaking Wimbledon 2024 upset, 13th-seeded American Taylor Fritz overcame a two-set deficit to defeat fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev with scores of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in the fourth round. This hard-fought victory propels Fritz into the quarterfinals after an intense five-set match.
The 26-year-old Californian has matched his career-best showing in Grand Slam tennis. Fritz starred in the 35th game, which went into five sets at the All England Club this season. This Grand Slam event has now tied the record for the most five-setters at any major tournament in the Open era, which began in 1968.
Fritz’s remarkable comeback is the 11th from a two-set deficit in the 2024 edition of Wimbledon, surpassing any other year. His tenacity and resilience were on full display as he battled through the match, earning a well-deserved spot in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Zverev, who finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open last month and lost in the final of the 2020 US Open against Dominic Thiem, was unable to withstand Fritz’s relentless comeback.
In the quarterfinals, Fritz will face 25th-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Meanwhile, No. 9 Alex de Minaur will play against either seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic or No. 15 Holger Rune, adding to the excitement of the tournament.
