SwachhSurvekshan 2023: Cleanest Cities of Urban India to be Revealed

New Delhi: Anticipation is building as the results of the 8th edition of SwachhSurvekshan, the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey, are set to be unveiled. The prestigious awards ceremony, where the cleanest cities of urban India will be honored, is scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam on January 11, 2024. President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will preside over the national event organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, presenting over 110 awards across various categories.

The SwachhSurvekshan initiative has successfully ignited a spirit of healthy competition among cities, inspiring them to elevate urban sanitation standards and deliver improved services to residents. What began with the evaluation of 73 major cities in 2016 has expanded its reach to include 4,477 cities in the current edition. This year’s awards prioritize addressing crucial aspects such as legacy dumpsites, plastic waste management, and the implementation of the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Additionally, the safety of SafaiMitras, the frontline sanitation workers, is a key focus.

SwachhSurvekshan 2023 aimed at transforming waste into valuable resources and underwent evaluation by a team of over 3,000 assessors. The survey’s unique emphasis on citizen engagement and feedback has played a pivotal role in its success. Covering a population of approximately 409 million, the survey received an astounding 12 crore citizen responses during the assessment, showcasing an unprecedented level of engagement through various channels. The awards ceremony will recognize not only the cleanest cities but also states for their outstanding performances in various categories, underscoring the commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier urban environment in India.
