Andhra Pradesh: Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, on Tuesday emphasized the vital role of Indian Railways in the nation’s identity and economic progress. Speaking after the virtual inauguration of the redeveloped Sullurupeta railway station in Andhra Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr. Pemmasani said the Indian Railways is more than a mode of transport—it is a symbol of national pride, progress, and purpose.
“The Indian Railways is not just part of our economy—it is part of our identity,” the Minister declared, noting that over two crore passengers travel by train every day and that the railways stand among the largest employers in the world.
Highlighting the transformation of Indian infrastructure under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Dr. Pemmasani said, “In today’s India, infrastructure is not just about convenience—it is about confidence. We need stations that are accessible, efficient, and reflective of our national aspirations.”
The Sullurupeta railway station, redeveloped at a cost of ₹14.5 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, now stands as a modern gateway in the sacred Tirupati district. The station is also the closest rail access point to Sriharikota, India’s leading spaceport, adding to its strategic significance.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to revamp over 1,300 railway stations across India, enhancing passenger amenities, integrating transport systems, and promoting urban renewal. Dr. Pemmasani highlighted that Andhra Pradesh has received special attention under this scheme, with 73 stations undergoing redevelopment.
He also provided a broader overview of railway development in the state over the past 11 years. “From 2009 to 2014, the budget allocation for Andhra Pradesh was modest. But under this government, the allocation surged to ₹9,417 crore for 2025–26—more than tenfold,” the Minister noted.
Key achievements include the addition of 414 kilometers of new railway lines, doubling of 1,217 kilometers, and electrification of 3,748 kilometers. A total of 41 railway infrastructure projects worth ₹34,700 crore have been sanctioned for the state in the last decade.
