Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) on Tuesday welcomed a new member with the swearing-in of Sudhanshu Sekhar Barpanda, a development expected to further strengthen the state’s power sector regulation and governance framework.
Barpanda took the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held in the Hearing Hall of OERC in Bhubaneswar. The event was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department Vishal Kumar Dev, members of the Commission, senior government officials and representatives of various power sector organisations.
The induction of Barpanda comes at a crucial time as Odisha continues to focus on power sector reforms, improved service delivery and the integration of renewable energy into its electricity network.
OERC serves as the state’s key regulatory body for the electricity sector and is responsible for functions such as tariff determination, licensing of utilities, consumer grievance redressal and promoting efficiency and competition within the power industry.
Officials said Barpanda’s extensive administrative experience is expected to contribute significantly to the Commission’s efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight and support the state’s long-term energy goals.
The Commission plays a critical role in balancing the interests of consumers, utilities and other stakeholders while ensuring reliable and affordable electricity services across Odisha. It also supports initiatives aimed at improving energy security and advancing sustainable power development.
Senior officials from the Energy Department, Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC), Grid Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO), Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL), OERC and various power distribution and generation utilities participated in the swearing-in ceremony.
Officials expressed confidence that Barpanda’s appointment would further enhance the Commission’s capacity to promote consumer-centric governance and support the vision of a developed and energy-secure Odisha.
