Successful Flight Test of Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile Conducted by DRDO

Chandipur: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) marked a significant achievement today as it conducted a successful flight-test of the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, situated off the coast of Odisha. The test, which took place on April 18, 2024, showcased exemplary performance across all subsystems, meeting or exceeding expectations.

Key Range Sensors such as Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System (EOTS), and Telemetry, strategically deployed by ITR at various locations, meticulously monitored the missile’s trajectory, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout its flight path. Additionally, real-time monitoring was facilitated from the Su-30-Mk-I aircraft of the Indian Air Force, further enhancing the observational capacity.

The ITCM exhibited precise navigation capabilities, adhering to the intended trajectory through way point navigation and executing a remarkable low altitude sea-skimming flight. Notably, the successful flight test also underscored the reliability of the indigenous propulsion system developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in Bengaluru.

Equipped with cutting-edge avionics and software, the missile promises enhanced performance and reliability, a testament to the collaborative efforts of Bengaluru-based DRDO laboratory Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), alongside contributions from other laboratories and Indian industries.

The test witnessed the presence of senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories and representatives from the production partner, affirming the collaborative spirit driving India’s defense research and development initiatives.

In response to the successful test, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh extended congratulations to DRDO, acknowledging the milestone achieved in the development of indigenous long-range subsonic cruise missile technology powered by indigenous propulsion—a feat with profound implications for India’s defense R&D landscape.

Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Chairman DRDO, Dr. Samir V Kamat, lauded the collective efforts of the DRDO team, emphasizing the significance of the successful ITCM launch in bolstering India’s defense capabilities.
