Startup India Initiative Shows Remarkable Growth, Creating Over 12.42 Lakh Jobs

New Delhi: The Indian government, aiming to foster innovation, startup growth, and encourage investments, initiated the Startup India program on January 16, 2016. Various programs under this initiative have been implemented to achieve specific objectives, leading to a significant impact on the startup ecosystem. As of December 31, 2023, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognized a remarkable 1,17,254 startups, collectively generating over 12.42 lakh direct jobs.

The sustained efforts by the government have resulted in the presence of at least one recognized startup in every State and Union Territory (UT), spanning over 80% of the districts nationwide. This widespread recognition underscores the initiative’s success in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation across the country.

Annexure-I provides a State/UT-wise breakdown of DPIIT-recognized startups for the last five years (2019-2023), while Annexure-II outlines the corresponding direct job creation figures during the same period.

Since the launch of the Startup India initiative in 2016, the government reports that 55,816 DPIIT-recognized startups have at least one woman director as of December 31, 2023. This statistic reflects a positive trend towards gender diversity and inclusivity within the startup ecosystem.

In addition to recognizing startups, the government is actively promoting women entrepreneurship through various schemes and programs. Annexure III provides details about these government initiatives aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs and fostering their participation in the startup landscape.

This information was shared by Shri Som Parkash, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, highlighting the substantial growth and positive impact of the Startup India initiative.
