Rourkela: In a heart-stopping encounter at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, India clinched a sensational 8-7 shootout victory against Spain after a 2-2 draw in regulation time during their fifth match of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. The standout performance came from goalkeeper P.R Sreejesh, who made a crucial save in the shootout to secure India’s win and an additional bonus point.
The match began with India’s Jarmanpreet Singh scoring a spectacular field goal in the first minute, showcasing an aggressive start. However, Spain responded swiftly, earning a penalty corner, and Jose Basterra found the net in the 3rd minute to level the score. Spain took the lead in the 15th minute as Borja Lacalle capitalized on a pass from Captain Marc Miralles.
India continued to apply pressure on Spain’s defense, earning penalty corners, but Spain held their ground. The first half concluded with Spain leading 2-1.
The third quarter witnessed an intense battle, with both teams displaying fast-paced hockey. India managed to equalize when Abhishek scored from a penalty corner in the 35th minute, bringing the score to 2-2 by the end of the quarter.
In the final quarter, India intensified its attacks, earning a penalty corner with six minutes remaining. However, Spain’s goalkeeper thwarted the attempt, and the regulation time ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
The shootout unfolded with remarkable saves from Sreejesh, securing India’s win. Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek, and Raj Kumar Pal successfully converted their chances, earning India a well-deserved bonus point.
