Soorma Hockey Club Clinches Thrilling Victory Over Delhi SG Pipers in Hero Hockey India League

Rourkela: Soorma Hockey Club staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Delhi SG Pipers 2-2 (3-1 SO) in a penalty shootout in the Hero Hockey India League at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium today. A spirited performance from Harmanpreet Singh and goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch proved decisive in the nail-biting encounter.

The match began with Soorma showing slight dominance in possession, but Delhi SG Pipers were the first to penetrate the opponent’s circle. Despite early opportunities for both sides, including a penalty corner for the Pipers and a close-range effort by Soorma’s Maninder Singh, the first half ended in a goalless stalemate.

The Pipers pushed harder in the second quarter, testing Soorma’s defense repeatedly. However, Tomas Domene and Raj Kumar Pal missed key chances, leaving the game wide open as the teams headed into halftime.

Delhi SG Pipers broke the deadlock in the third quarter with a precise finish by Tomas Domene, who slotted the ball through Vanasch’s legs in the 43rd minute. Just two minutes later, Manjeet Singh doubled the lead, diving to deflect a Jake Whetton cross into the roof of the net. The Pipers appeared poised for victory, dominating the quarter with relentless pressure.

Facing a two-goal deficit, Soorma Hockey Club began the final quarter with renewed intensity. In the 48th minute, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag flick through the goalkeeper’s legs. Soorma maintained the pressure and earned another penalty corner in the 57th minute. Once again, Harmanpreet delivered, this time placing the ball in the bottom right corner to level the score at 2-2 and force a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Soorma’s Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nicolas Keenan, and Boris Burkhardt found the back of the net, while Vincent Vanasch emerged as the hero, making three crucial saves to secure the bonus point for Soorma.
