Bhubaneswar: In a disturbing case that has sparked public outrage across Odisha, police have arrested six persons and produced four juveniles before the Juvenile Justice Board in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student at Gopalpur Beach in Ganjam district.
According to Ganjam police, the incident occurred late Sunday night during the Raja festival when the survivor and her male friend visited a relatively secluded area of the popular tourist destination. A group of ten men allegedly surrounded the couple, restrained the male companion, and took turns raping the woman. The heinous act has sent shockwaves across the state and raised serious concerns about women’s safety in public spaces.
The accused have been identified as Pramod Nayak (23) of Purushottampur, Kunal Pradhan (24) of Bellagam, Baburam Dalai (19), Lakman Pradhan (24), Om Pradhan (19), and Deepak Tarai, all hailing from the Hinjili police limits. The four juveniles, all residents of Sikiri village in the same area, have been detained and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M informed that a total of 10 suspects were detained initially, and all were arrested before they could flee the state. “Three of the accused took turns raping the survivor, while the others stood guard. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed for a speedy and thorough probe,” he said.
The SP further revealed that Pramod Nayak, identified as the prime accused, is a B.Tech dropout working at an electronics factory in Bengaluru. He had returned home on leave and was previously involved in two other criminal cases.
Authorities have completed the survivor’s medical examination, and police have announced their intent to seek court permission to try the juveniles as adults, citing the gravity of the crime.
The case has prompted immediate political response. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who holds the Women and Child Development portfolio, stated that she has directed officials to ensure a swift and transparent investigation. “Such incidents are unacceptable. We are committed to securing justice for the survivor and ensuring stronger preventive measures,” she said.
Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident, calling it “deeply shocking.” He added, “That such a crime could occur at Gopalpur—a prominent tourist destination—is a matter of grave concern. The state government must act decisively to restore public faith in law and order.”
The State Crime Branch, under the supervision of IG Shyni S, has already taken over the investigation, treating it as a “Red Flag” case due to its serious nature.
