Shubman Gill’s Heroics Propel India to Set Challenging Target for England in Third Test

Vizag: In a thrilling turn of events on Day 2 of the third Test between India and England, Shubman Gill’s outstanding century in the second innings provided India with a substantial lead, ultimately setting a challenging target of 399 for the visitors. As the day concluded, England managed to erase 67 runs from the target, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion.

Gill’s resilient innings, reminiscent of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s contribution in the first innings, proved instrumental in covering India’s batting shortcomings. Despite a shaky start, Gill showcased remarkable composure, overcoming close LBW calls and contributing significantly to India’s total.

Starting the day with a mission to extend their lead of 171, India faced a formidable challenge from England’s veteran James Anderson. The 41-year-old bowler set the tone early, dismissing Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal in quick succession. Gill survived two close LBW calls, showing resilience against Tom Hartley and Anderson.

Gill, along with Shreyas Iyer, then built an 81-run partnership, with Gill reaching a well-deserved fifty. However, Iyer’s dismissal and quick fall of wickets, including debutant Rajat Patidar, left India in a precarious position before Lunch.

After the break, Gill and Axar Patel steadied the ship with a sensible 89-run partnership, pushing India’s lead further. Gill’s determined effort resulted in a century, but his dismissal after attempting a reverse sweep off Shoaib Bashir halted India’s progress. Axar, too, fell victim to Hartley, leaving India with a lead approaching 400.

In the second innings, England’s chase began briskly with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley contributing to a 50-run stand. However, India managed to break through when Duckett was caught bat-pad off R Ashwin, injecting a sense of optimism for the home team.

As the game stands intriguingly poised, the upcoming sessions promise intense cricket action with England needing 332 more runs to secure an improbable victory. The third Test’s fourth day is set to deliver a thrilling climax, keeping cricket enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.
