
Bhubaneswar: Odisha experienced scorching heatwave conditions on Sunday as temperatures soared to 40°C or higher in 30 locations across the state. According to the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, Baripada emerged as the hottest place in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 44.6°C.
Thirteen other cities also witnessed temperatures of 43°C or above, making it a challenging day for residents battling the intense heat. Among them, Nuapada registered 44°C, Talcher 43.8°C, Jharsuguda and Keonjhar 43.6°C, and Bolangir at 43.2°C.
The IMD’s observations further highlighted the severity of the heatwave, with several cities experiencing temperatures close to the 44°C mark. Sundargarh and Boudh recorded 43°C, while Dhenkanal reached 42.9°C. Other areas such as Titilagarh reported 42.5°C, Rourkela 42.1°C, and Bhawanipatna and Nayagarh both recorded 42°C.
The sweltering conditions persisted throughout the day, with Chandbala and Hirakud reaching 41.9°C, and Bhadrak at 41.8°C. Sambalpur and Malkangiri experienced temperatures of 41.7°C, while the state capital, Bhubaneswar, saw the mercury rise to 41.6°C.
Even coastal areas did not escape the heatwave, with Paralakhemundi and Jajpur both recording 41°C. Meanwhile, Phulbani, Sonepur, Bargarh, and Kendrapara reported temperatures of 40.8°C. Balasore and Khurda experienced 40.5°C, while Jagatsinghpur recorded 40°C.
The IMD has issued advisories urging residents to take precautions against the heatwave, including staying indoors during peak hours, staying hydrated, and avoiding outdoor activities. The heatwave is expected to continue in the coming days, amplifying concerns for public health and safety across the state.
