Seven Traditional Products from Odisha Receives Geographical Indication Tags

Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, seven distinct products native to Odisha have been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai. This recognition further underscores the rich cultural diversity and traditional craftsmanship that Odisha is renowned for.

The newly accorded GI tags embrace the following unique Odia treasures:

Odisha Khajuri Guda: This traditional sweet delicacy holds a special place in Odisha’s culinary heritage, known for its unique flavor and preparation methods.

Dhenkanal Magji: An indigenous preparation with historical roots, Dhenkanal Magji showcases the culinary artistry of the region, adding to the state’s gastronomic identity.

Similipal Kai Chutney of Odisha: A savory delight, this chutney is a testament to the culinary diversity present in Odisha, with flavors reflecting the local taste preferences.

Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal: Named after Nayagarh district, this brinjal variety boasts distinctive qualities, contributing to the rich agricultural heritage of the region.

Kapadaganda: Dungaria Kondh Embroidery Shawl: Representing the skilled craftsmanship of the Dungaria Kondh community, this embroidered shawl reflects the unique artistry passed down through generations.

Koraput Kalajeera Rice: Originating from Koraput district, this traditional rice variety holds cultural significance and is cherished for its distinct taste and aroma.

Painting of Lanjia Saura (Idital): The Lanjia Saura tribe’s artistic expression, Idital paintings, has earned a well-deserved GI tag. These paintings were originally exterior murals on tribal homes, featuring white patterns on a crimson maroon background.

With the addition of these seven products, Odisha’s GI list now boasts a total of 25 unique items. The GI tags not only acknowledge the authenticity of these traditional products but also contribute to their protection, ensuring they retain their distinct identity and heritage.
