Seminar on Air and Naval Synergy Highlights India’s Strategic Strength in the Indian Ocean Region

Bhubaneswar: In a significant initiative to bolster joint operational capabilities, Headquarters Southern Air Command, in collaboration with the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), hosted a seminar on “Synergising Air and Naval Forces: Enhancing Combat Power in the Indian Ocean Region.” The event, held on 25 February, saw the presence of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan as the Chief Guest, alongside Air Marshal SP Dharkar, Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

Addressing the gathering, General Chauhan emphasized the need for preparedness and vigilance in the face of evolving global security challenges. He highlighted India’s strategic geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the growing necessity of integrating air and naval capabilities to protect national interests. Stressing the importance of force projection, he pointed out that technological advancements, strategic partnerships, and joint operational exercises will be key to strengthening India’s defence posture in the region.

Air Marshal Dharkar, in his keynote address, underlined the critical role of real-time intelligence sharing and seamless coordination between the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. He stressed that emerging threats in the IOR demand an integrated approach, with both forces working in unison to enhance maritime security and combat preparedness.

The seminar featured two high-level discussions, bringing together senior officers from Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Headquarters Southern Air Command, the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and CAPS. Deliberations focused on optimizing maritime air operations, modern air-sea battle strategies, the role of unmanned systems in maritime security, and the impact of evolving geopolitical dynamics on India’s defense readiness. Experts provided insights into force optimization and resource allocation to ensure a sustained strategic advantage in the IOR.

The event reinforced the Indian Armed Forces’ commitment to fostering inter-service cooperation and strengthening India’s position as a maritime power. It served as a vital platform for defense professionals to exchange best practices and innovative strategies aimed at securing India’s maritime domain. The seminar concluded with a consensus on the need for continued collaboration, sustained modernization, and a clear focus on enhancing combat capabilities to meet future security challenges effectively.
