Bangkok: The Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured the Thailand Open 2024 men’s doubles title with a decisive victory over China’s Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi in the final held at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Sunday.
Ranked third in the world, Satwik and Chirag outplayed their 29th-ranked Chinese opponents with a straight-set victory of 21-15, 21-15, completing the match in just 36 minutes. This triumph marks their second title of the 2024 badminton season and their second Thailand Open title, solidifying their dominance in the sport.
The Indian pair first claimed a Super 500 title on the BWF World Tour at the Thailand Open in 2019. Their latest victory in Bangkok represents their fifth win in a BWF Super 500 final, maintaining an unblemished record in these high-stakes matches.
This latest victory brings Satwik and Chirag’s total BWF World Tour titles to eight. Last year, they triumphed at the Swiss Open, Indonesia Open, and Korea Open. Earlier this year, they reached the finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open but fell short. However, they bounced back to win the French Open in March.
The impressive performance at the Thailand Open adds 9200 ranking points to their tally, putting them on track to reclaim the world No. 1 rank next week. Their next challenge will be at the Malaysia Masters BWF Super 500 tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
