Russia Honours Biju Patnaik’s WWII Contribution; Naveen Patnaik Attends Memorial Ceremony in Delhi

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: In a moving tribute to one of India’s most revered freedom fighters and aviators, the Russian government has honoured Biju Patnaik for his valiant contributions during World War II. A special memorial plaque was unveiled in his honour at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi on Thursday, marking 80 years since the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

The ceremony, which celebrated the Battle of Stalingrad and allied efforts during WWII, saw the presence of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Odisha’s Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik, who expressed deep gratitude to Russia for commemorating his father’s legacy.

“Honoured to attend the memorial plaque inauguration ceremony at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi to commemorate the contribution of legendary Biju Patnaik in the Stalingrad Operation during WWII,” Naveen Patnaik posted on X.

He further added that the people of Odisha would be immensely pleased with this recognition for a leader they regard with great reverence.

During World War II, Biju Patnaik served as a daring pilot who flew several high-risk missions to support the Soviet Red Army, particularly during the critical Battle of Stalingrad. His efforts in transporting arms, supplies, and medical aid under extremely perilous conditions made a lasting impression on the wartime alliance.

In recognition of his bravery, the Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, unveiled a memorial plaque within the Embassy premises, commemorating Patnaik’s exceptional role in aiding the Soviet war effort. Ambassador Alipov had personally invited Naveen Patnaik to attend the occasion.

The solemn event was attended by diplomats, defence officials, historians, and other dignitaries, and it underscored the enduring India-Russia strategic and historical relationship. The tribute to Biju Patnaik served as a reminder of the shared sacrifices that shaped global peace in the mid-20th century.

“The Battle of Stalingrad led to success for Russia in the war against Nazi Germany which saved the world from untold horror,” Naveen Patnaik noted in his statement, praising the global significance of the Soviet victory.
