Royal Challengers Bangalore Becomes Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Embracing Local Identity

Bengaluru:  Taking a stride that resonates with the cultural fabric of the city, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has officially adopted its hometown’s vernacular name, Bengaluru, as part of its team identity. The announcement came during the franchise’s UNBOX event at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday (March 19).

Since its inception in 2008, RCB has been synonymous with Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) circuit. However, in a bid to embrace the city’s official nomenclature, the franchise unveiled its new name, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, marking a significant shift in its branding strategy.

The decision to incorporate ‘Bengaluru’ into the team name follows weeks of anticipation, fueled by teasing promotional campaigns on social media. The move underscores a growing trend among IPL franchises to align their identities with the cultural ethos of their respective regions.

Local fans had long clamored for the change, especially after Karnataka’s capital officially transitioned to the vernacular ‘Bengaluru’ on November 1, 2014. The move by RCB not only reflects a nod to the city’s rich heritage but also strengthens the bond between the franchise and its passionate fan base.

RCB joins the ranks of IPL teams that have undergone name transformations in recent years. Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, rebranded themselves three years ago, while Delhi Capitals emerged from the erstwhile Delhi Daredevils following investment from the JSW Group.

Historically, IPL franchises have shown a willingness to adapt and evolve their identities to resonate with local sentiments. Notably, the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant tweaked its name, dropping the ‘s’ at the end, ahead of its final season in the league, reflecting a similar trend of embracing regional nuances.
