Bhubaneswar: In a significant stride towards environmental rejuvenation and women’s empowerment, the state-level event on the “Ama Pokhari” initiative was conducted today in Bhubaneswar under the dynamic 5T governance framework of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The event witnessed the signing of agreements and distribution of work orders to 364 Mission Shakti Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the MUKTA program, aiming to revive 95 water bodies across 16 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state.
Usha Devi, Minister of Housing & Urban Development emphasized the transformative nature of the “Ama Pokhari” initiative, describing it not only as a venture to restore water bodies but also as a journey of empowerment, sustainability, and community collaboration—a true embodiment of the 5T’s transformative approach.
The heart of this initiative lies with the women of Mission Shakti, stated Usha Devi. Addressing them directly, she said, “You will become their guardians, educate your communities, spread the word about saving our water bodies.” The “Ama Pokhari” Initiative, according to her, is about providing the power to earn, lead, and shape the future of women in the Mission Shakti groups. She urged them to work hard and showcase their incredible spirit, fostering “Ama Pokhari” into a success story that inspires the world.
G. Mathivathanan, Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing & Urban Development Department, provided an overview of the initiative’s progress since its launch by the Chief Minister in July 2023. He highlighted how “Ama Pokhari” functions as a transformative initiative addressing women’s empowerment, environmental sustainability, and urban infrastructure development. The program engages Mission Shakti SHGs in crucial conservation and restoration work, showcasing the government’s commitment to urban renewal and community involvement.
The event witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including Ashok Chandra Panda, Minister for Social Security & Empowerment of persons with Disabilities, Science & Technology Dept; Ananta Narayan Jena, MLA Central; Sulochana Das, Mayor, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. They collectively stressed the importance of “Ama Pokhari” in improving urban living standards and creating a new paradigm in community participation, underscoring the government’s focus on its citizens and transparent governance.
