Ahmedabad: After 18 long years of heartbreak and near misses, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally lifted their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, edging out Punjab Kings by six runs in a nerve-wracking final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday.
Led by first-time skipper Rajat Patidar, RCB overcame early batting setbacks and produced a resolute bowling display to defend a modest 190/9. Punjab Kings, despite a valiant late assault by Shashank Singh (61* off 30), fell short at 184/7 in their 20 overs, leaving RCB to script history in front of a roaring Ahmedabad crowd.
Arshdeep Singh (3/40) and Kyle Jamieson (3/38) had earlier rocked RCB’s batting lineup, but key contributions from Virat Kohli (43), Patidar (26), and Jitesh Sharma (24) helped them post a competitive total. The score proved just enough, thanks to a collective bowling effort from Krunal Pandya (2/17), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38), and Romanio Shepherd, who seized crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs.
Punjab Kings began their chase steadily at 52/1, but a collapse ensued with the dismissals of Priyansh Arya (24), Prabhsimran Singh, skipper Shreyas Iyer (1), and Josh Inglis (39), who had briefly reignited the chase with four sixes. Krunal Pandya’s economical spell in the middle overs was instrumental in choking the run flow and breaking the backbone of PBKS’s batting.
PBKS’s last hope, Shashank Singh, launched a late offensive with two sixes off Hazlewood in the 16th over and a few lusty blows later, but the mounting required run rate left him with too much to do in the final overs. Needing 29 off the last six balls, Shashank’s fireworks weren’t enough to push Punjab over the line.
The win also marked an emotional milestone for Virat Kohli, who finally tasted IPL glory after 18 years of loyalty to a single franchise. With this title, Kohli becomes the first cricketer to win the IPL after playing for the same team throughout his career.
RCB’s victory was built on tactical bowling changes and sharp fielding efforts. Hazlewood, Yash Dayal, and Suyash Sharma executed the team’s plans to perfection, while Pandya’s timely wickets, including that of the dangerous Josh Inglis, tilted the match in RCB’s favour.
Punjab, on the other hand, were left to rue their middle-order collapse and failure to capitalize on the strong platform laid early in the innings. Despite reaching a second IPL final in his career, Shreyas Iyer couldn’t guide his side over the line.
