Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has taken a major step toward improving track safety by deploying advanced 96-Stone Rail Grinding Machines (RGI96-5). These state-of-the-art machines, recently commissioned, are designed to enhance ride quality, ensure passenger safety, and extend the lifespan of railway tracks.
The RGI96-5 is among the most sophisticated rail grinding machines used worldwide. Spanning over 165 meters in length with eight coaches, the machine features 96 grinding stones—48 on each side—angled to effectively eliminate surface defects, smoothen track irregularities, and restore rails to their optimal profile. This process not only increases the longevity of the rails but also enhances the overall safety and comfort of train journeys.
Capable of operating at speeds of up to 22 kilometers per hour, the machine covers large track sections efficiently, minimizing train service disruptions. It has already been deployed successfully in the Waltair and Sambalpur divisions and is currently in use in the Khurda division in Odisha, playing a crucial role in maintaining track integrity.
In addition to the RGI96-5, ECoR commissioned a 20-Stone Special Rail Grinding Machine in January 2023, tailored to handle intricate track elements like switches, crossovers, and level crossings. These areas, critical for safe train operations, demand specialized maintenance, and the machine is equipped to meet those needs efficiently.
The deployment of these advanced rail grinding machines is part of ECoR’s broader commitment to safety and innovation.
