Puri: The Puri Heritage Walks (PHW) group held its second heritage walk today in the sacred city of Puri, drawing over 30 participants who explored iconic sites including the Yajnya Nrusingha Temple, Indradyumna Sarovar, and Siddha Mahavir Temple, while learning about the rich legends and history tied to these shrines.
The walk commenced at the Sri Gundicha Temple, where participants gathered in the morning to offer their respects to Mundia Maraa Patita Pavana and Mundia Maraa Mahavir, located near the temple walls. From there, the group proceeded to the Yajnya Nrusingha Temple, where after offering prayers, heritage expert Sidharth Acharya shared insights into the significance of Nrusingha Upasana in Jagannath culture. He also discussed the historical and architectural features of the temple.
Acharya further elaborated on the heritage and myths surrounding the Indradyumna Sarovar, Neelakantheswar Temple, Gopinath Temple, and Siddha Mahavir Temple. At Indradyumna Sarovar, heritage expert Ashoka Nayak highlighted the importance of Pancha Tirtha in Puri and the pivotal role of Indradyumna Sarovar in the sacred pilgrimage.
The group then visited Neelakantheswar Temple and Gopinath Temple, where they were introduced to the iconography of these shrines. The walk continued to Siddha Mahavir Temple, where participants offered prayers to Sri Siddha Mahavir and explored various ancient sculptures housed in the temple.
The walk also included a visit to the residence of heritage expert Dr. Krushna Chandra Mishra, located near the Siddha Mahavir Temple, where they assembled at the Mrutyunjay Temple on the premises to hear his enlightening talk on Indian heritage and the sculptures of the Jagannath Temple.
Dr. Mishra was honored by PHW advisor Debi Prasanna Nanda, along with conveners Sanjay Kumar Baral, Biswaranjan Dehury, and Dr. Kumar Aurojyoti.
The participants, comprising heritage enthusiasts from Puri, Konark, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack, included notable figures such as Chunara servitor Dr. Sarat Kumar Mohanty and cuisine author Ritu Pattanaik. The walk concluded with a traditional “prasad sevan” at the Siddha Mahavir Temple.
