Puri Heritage Walks Explores Sacred Narendra Sarovar and Historic Ashrams

Puri: The 10th edition of the Puri Heritage Walks (PHW) unfolded a rich tapestry of spiritual legacy and cultural storytelling yesterday as around 20 heritage enthusiasts from Puri, Bhubaneswar, Konark, and Rourkela embarked on a guided trail around the revered Narendra Sarovar and its surrounding landmarks.

The walk commenced with a visit to the sacred Narendra Sarovar, a site of immense religious significance known for hosting the annual Chandan Yatra. From there, the participants delved deeper into Puri’s spiritual heritage, exploring several nearby shrines and monasteries including Kalindiswara Temple, Gopal Jew Mutt, Brahma Jaga, Jatia Babaji Ashram, Kuladananda Brahmachari Ashram, and Baya Baba Mutt.

A special heritage discussion was held at Kuladananda Brahmachari Ashram, where PHW Convener Sanjay Baral welcomed the participants and set the tone for an interactive session. Ashoka Manjari Nayak, a speaker with deep knowledge of Puri’s rituals, offered insights into the Chandan Yatra’s historical evolution. She explained how the festival, once held at Chandanpur, was moved to Narendra Sarovar after the latter’s construction, becoming its present-day spiritual hub. She also elaborated on the intricate rituals that accompany the water festival.

Adding a culinary perspective, Odia cuisine author Ritu Pattanaik introduced the group to the “Mandua Bhoga”, a special offering prepared for deities during the Chandan Yatra. Nutritionist Jyotsna Mohapatra shared her personal experiences with previous PHW events, emphasizing their blend of cultural learning and spiritual immersion.

PHW Advisor Debi Prasanna Nanda offered a deeper interpretation of the divine aura surrounding Narendra Sarovar, touching upon its mystical and spiritual dimensions. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Co-convener Dr. Kumar Aurojyoti, acknowledging the collective effort in preserving and promoting the region’s intangible heritage.

The group later returned to Narendra Sarovar to witness the enchanting “Chapa Khela”, a traditional water sport played by the deities as part of the Chandan Yatra celebrations—an experience that further immersed the participants in the ritualistic spirit of the festival.

The heritage walk concluded with a visit to Baya Baba Mutt, where participants were treated to traditional Odia delicacies prepared on-site—offering a flavorful end to a journey steeped in history, spirituality, and community celebration.
