Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates HURL Sindri Fertilizer Plant, Marks Milestone Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Sindri:  Ensuring India achieve self-sufficiency in urea production, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd (HURL) Sindri Fertiliser Plant at Sindri, Dhanbad, Jharkhand today. The Prime Minister, who laid the foundation of the fertilizer plant in 2018, emphasized the plant’s crucial role in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) journey.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi underscored the growth in urea production over the last decade, stating, “Due to the efforts of our government, in the last 10 years, urea production has risen to 310 lakh metric tonnes.” He highlighted the importance of reducing the gap between demand and production, noting that the Sindri plant and others in the pipeline would contribute significantly to achieving self-sufficiency.

The HURL Sindri Fertilizer Plant is a joint venture involving key public sector undertakings, including the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Coal India Ltd (CIL), and FCIL/HFCL. The plant, with an installed capacity of 12.7 LMT per annum, commenced urea production on November 5, 2022.

Prime Minister Modi revealed plans for the revival of other fertilizer plants, including Ramagundam, Gorakhpur, Barauni, and the upcoming Talcher Fertilizer plant. He asserted that these efforts would rapidly contribute towards India’s Aatmanirbharta in the critical area of urea production.

The Sindri plant, with an investment of Rs. 8939.25 Crore, aims to bridge the gap in urea availability, particularly in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. It is expected to create employment opportunities, directly employing 450 individuals and indirectly benefiting 1000 more. Furthermore, the plant’s operation is anticipated to spur overall economic development in the region, fostering infrastructure growth and supporting ancillary industries.

As part of the government’s initiative to revive closed urea units of Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd. (FCIL) and Hindustan Fertilizers Corporation Ltd (HFCL), the Sindri plant is a cornerstone in achieving self-sufficiency in the urea sector. With “Bharat Urea” produced by HURL, India is set to reduce imports significantly and provide local farmers with timely access to fertilizers and extension services.

The inauguration of the HURL Sindri Fertilizer Plant marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat, ensuring food security and economic prosperity for the nation.
