
New Delhi: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the International Conference on Innovation in Unani Medicine for Integrative Health Solutions in New Delhi today, marking the celebration of Unani Day.
Speaking at the event, the President paid tribute to Hakim Ajmal Khan, whose contributions to the Unani system of medicine led to the establishment of Unani Day in 2016. She acknowledged his pioneering efforts in spreading the Unani system across India and emphasized his role in introducing innovative practices that contributed to its widespread adoption.
Highlighting India’s leadership in education, research, and healthcare in the Unani system, the President expressed her appreciation for the increasing integration of modern methodologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, into traditional medicine. She expressed confidence that the conference would explore contemporary topics such as evidence-based research trends in Unani medicine and the role of AI in enhancing AYUSH and traditional healing systems.
President Murmu reaffirmed India’s commitment to a holistic approach to healthcare, noting that the government is actively working to integrate various medical systems. She emphasized that the National Health Policy 2017 has played a crucial role in mainstreaming AYUSH, including Unani medicine. She also noted that under the guidance of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, numerous Unani medical institutions are conducting studies and research, with MD and PhD programs now being offered to strengthen the field.
Expressing confidence in the future of Unani medicine, the President stated that the new generation of Unani practitioners and researchers would continue to build upon the rich heritage of traditional knowledge, ensuring that it remains a valuable part of India’s healthcare system.
