PM Modi Inaugurates India Energy Week 2025, Highlights India’s Leadership in Global Energy Transition

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the third edition of India Energy Week (IEW) 2025 via video message, underscoring India’s commitment to shaping the global energy landscape. Addressing the gathering at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s five key pillars of energy growth—harnessing resources, fostering innovation, ensuring economic strength and political stability, leveraging strategic geography, and promoting global sustainability.

PM Modi emphasized India’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse, rising from the world’s 10th largest economy to the 5th in just a decade. He pointed out that India has made significant strides in renewable energy, with solar capacity expanding 32 times in the last ten years, making the country the third-largest solar power generator globally.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s progress in ethanol blending, reaching 19% ethanol use, which has saved foreign exchange, generated significant farmer revenue, and reduced carbon emissions. He reaffirmed India’s target of 20% ethanol blending by October 2025, positioning the nation as a global leader in biofuels.

Discussing India’s hydrocarbon sector, Modi outlined major policy reforms to boost domestic oil and gas production. He highlighted:

  • Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) to attract investments in oil and gas exploration.
  • Expansion of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for exploration.
  • Implementation of a single-window clearance system to fast-track projects.
  • Refining capacity expansion by 20%, reinforcing India’s status as the 4th largest refining hub globally.

The PM noted that natural gas infrastructure is expanding, leading to increased usage and new investment opportunities in the sector.

Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, hailed IEW 2025 as the world’s second-largest energy event, drawing over 70,000 energy professionals from 50+ countries, 20+ Ministers, and 100 CEOs from Fortune 500 companies.

Puri emphasized that India’s energy transition must be pragmatic, integrating hydrocarbons, renewables, hydrogen, and biofuels. He cited global energy investments surpassing $3 trillion in 2024, with $2 trillion dedicated to clean energy technologies, signaling a decisive shift towards sustainability.

Highlighting India’s role in energy innovation, Puri noted:

  • Global energy firms (BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron) operating R&D centers in India.
  • 500+ start-ups driving AI-powered energy solutions, quantum computing, and battery technologies.
  • Scaling up hydrogen production to 5 million metric tonnes by 2030.

The Minister stressed the importance of “energy justice”, warning against policies that exclude developing economies from the energy transition. He called for resilient supply chains in critical minerals, semiconductors, and emerging technologies to ensure equitable progress.

Puri urged stakeholders to leverage India Energy Week as a transformative platform for stabilizing energy markets, advancing technology, and enhancing global cooperation. With India playing a central role in the global energy shift, IEW 2025 is set to shape the future of sustainable energy solutions.
