State Tightens Fire Safety Measures After Bhubaneswar Market Blaze

Bhubaneswar: Prompted by the recent fire at the Priyadarshini Market Complex, the Odisha government has initiated a series of measures to strengthen fire safety systems across the state, with Chief Secretary Anu Garg leading a high-level review at Lok Seva Bhawan.

The meeting brought together key officials including Hemant Sharma, Sudhanshu Sarangi, Usha Padhee, Vishal Kumar Dev, and Chanchal Rana to assess preparedness and outline immediate actions.

As part of the response, departments have been directed to roll out a statewide awareness campaign focusing on fire prevention and emergency readiness. Authorities will also ensure routine audits and inspections of fire safety infrastructure in commercial and residential buildings.

Institutions and large establishments have been asked to strictly comply with safety norms, including maintaining valid fire certificates and designating trained personnel as fire supervisors. These supervisors will be equipped through specialised training by Fire Services teams.

Highlighting preventive measures, the Chief Secretary stressed the importance of regular electrical system checks to reduce fire risks, urging both institutions and citizens to remain vigilant.

During the discussions, Sudhanshu Sarangi emphasised the effective use of the 112 emergency helpline, which provides immediate access to police, fire, and medical assistance.

To strengthen outreach, the government will expand awareness initiatives through mass media platforms, supported by Civil Defence volunteers engaging directly with communities.

Additionally, the Fire Services, Housing & Urban Development, and Energy departments have been tasked with developing a joint Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure coordinated and swift response to fire incidents across Odisha.
