New Delhi: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed the nation during the 15th National Voters’ Day Celebrations in the capital today, emphasizing the significance of inclusive democracy and the role of voters in shaping the country’s future.
The President presented the Best Electoral Practices Awards to state and district officials for their outstanding contributions to ensuring smooth, fair, and transparent elections. She also received the first copy of the book “India Votes 2024: A Saga of Democracy” from Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar, which chronicles India’s democratic journey and the successful conduct of the 2024 General Elections.
In her address, President Murmu highlighted India’s distinction as not only the largest democracy in the world but also one of the most inclusive and sensitive. “Our democracy is a unique example for the modern world,” she said, noting that several countries look to India for lessons on election management and democratic practices.
She praised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its efforts to make the voting process accessible to all, particularly for senior citizens above 85 years, differently-abled voters, and tribal voters living in remote areas. These initiatives, she said, reflect the true spirit of India’s inclusive democracy.
President Murmu highlighted the increasing participation of women in elections as a vital indicator of the nation’s progress. She expressed pride in the evolving societal attitudes that encourage women’s active involvement in the democratic process, marking it as a milestone in India’s journey toward holistic development.
The President also underlined the importance of enlightened and responsible voting. Referring to the Voters’ Pledge issued by the ECI, she urged citizens to rise above narrow-mindedness, discrimination, and external temptations while exercising their right to vote. “An informed and responsible voter is the foundation of a strong democracy,” she said.
Observed annually on January 25, National Voters’ Day commemorates the foundation of the Election Commission of India in 1950. Since its inception in 2011, the day has served as a reminder of the centrality of the voter in the democratic process and aims to enhance electoral awareness and participation among citizens.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, senior officials, and award recipients from across the country.
