President Droupadi Murmu Graces Centenary Year Celebration of Maharashtra Legislative Council

Mumbai: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, today attended the centenary year celebration of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in Mumbai (September 3, 2024). Speaking at the event, she praised the Legislative Council for its vital role in reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the people of Maharashtra since its inception, while also serving as a responsive Upper Chamber.

During her address, President Murmu acknowledged the contributions of both current and former members of the Council, congratulating those who have been recognized for their exceptional work. She highlighted the Council’s tradition of fostering healthy debate and dialogue, which has strengthened democratic values in the state.

She also referenced the Employment Guarantee Scheme pioneered by the former Chairman of the Council, V.S. Page, which laid the groundwork for the national MGNREGA program. This, she noted, is a testament to the Council’s impact on public welfare.

Emphasizing the importance of Legislative Councils and Rajya Sabha as “Houses of Elders,” the President recognized the wisdom and experience that members of these bodies bring to parliamentary proceedings. She expressed her confidence that the Maharashtra Legislative Council would continue to uphold this tradition and enrich the legislative process.

President Murmu also applauded Maharashtra’s leadership in various sectors, particularly its economic achievements. Citing the 2023-24 Economic Survey, she noted that Maharashtra ranks first in the country in terms of State GDP, and attributed this success to the efforts of the state government, legislators, and its people. She expressed optimism for the state’s continued growth and prosperity, extending her best wishes for a bright future.
